Propionaldehyde, Propanal

Colorless liquid with limited miscibility in water above 15 °C, soluble in ethanol and diethyl ether. 

Propionaldehyde is a colorless, flammable liquid, having a suffocating odor. It should be used as a chemical intermediate only. It undergoes reactions typical for the low molecular weight aldehydes, which, because of the terminal carbonyl group, are very reactive. Contamination or the exposure to elevated temperatures may induce a hazardous polymerization. Propionaldehyde is readily oxidized if in contact to oxygen and should therefore be stored under inert gases.

Glycol ethers

High-boiling, low-volatility liquid with a mild odor that is used as a solvent and starting material for syntheses. Excellent co-solvent in aqueous coating systems (water-based paints).

Colorless, neutral, slightly hygroscopic, mobile liquid with a mild odor. The product is miscible with water and common organic solvents in all proportions at room temperature.

Butylglycol shows the reactions typical of an alcohol, such as esterification, etherification, oxidation and the formation of acetates and alcoholates. Like most ethers, it forms peroxides in the presence of atmospheric oxygen.

Butyldiglycol is a clear, low-volatility, mobile liquid with a very faint, mild odor. It is miscible with many common solvents, e. g. aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, ethers, glycols, glycol ethers and water. It may form peroxides if it comes into contact with atmospheric oxygen.

Low-volatility, high-boiling, clear, odourless liquid. The Butyltriglycol supplied by BASF SE is a technical-grade product.

Butyltriglycol is a clear, low-volatility, mobile liquid with a very faint, mild odour. It is miscible with many common solvents, e. g. aliphatic hydrocarbons, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, ethers, glycols, glycol ethers and water. Butyltriglycol may form peroxides, if it comes into contact with atmospheric oxygen.

Colorless, medium-volatility, water-miscible neutral liquid with a mild, alcoholic odour. Its favourable physiological properties make it preferable to methoxyethanol and ethoxyethanol as a solvent for coatings and printing inks. 

Solvenon® PM is a clear, hygroscopic, medium-volatility liquid with a mild, alcoholic odor. It is miscible with water and many common organic solvents. By virtue of its ether and alcohol groups, Solvenon® PM has very good solvent power for many of the raw materials used in coatings, e. g. resins, binders, etc. It possesses the typical properties of the ether and alcohol groups. For instance, it may react with acids (or form esters), oxidizing agents (to form the corresponding ketones or carboxylic acids), alkali metals (to form alcoholates) or aldehydes (to form acetals). Solvenon® PM may form peroxides with atmospheric oxygen.

Dipropylene glycol monomethyl ether, Methoxypropoxypropanol, Methyldipropylene glycol (mixture of isomers)

Clear, low-volatility, water-miscible, neutral liquid with a mild odour. Mainly used as a solvent in cleaners, printing inks, inks and in the coatings industry. In the latter case, it can be used together with Solvenon® PM, primarily to adjust the evaporation rate.

Solvenon® DPM is a mixture of isomers. It is a clear, high-boiling, hygroscopic, mobile, low-volatility liquid with a mild odour and is miscible with water and common organic solvents.

By virtue of the ether and alcohol groups in the constituent isomers, Solvenon® DPM is an excellent solvent for many of the raw materials that are used in coatings, e. g. resins and binders. An important feature of Solvenon® DPM is the fact that it acts as a solubilizer in many aqueous coating systems.

It possesses the typical properties of ethers and alcohols. For instance, it reacts with acids (to form esters), oxidizing agents (to form the corresponding aldehydes or carboxylic acids), alkali metals (to form alcoholates) or aldehydes (to form acetals).

Solvenon® DPM may form peroxides with atmospheric oxygen.

Glycol ether acetates

Low-volatility solvent with very good solvent power for numerous substances in the coatings and chemical downstream industries.

Butylglycol Acetate is a clear, low-volatility liquid with a faint ester odour. It is miscible with many common organic solvents, e. g. alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, ethers, glycols, and glycol ethers, but is only very sparingly soluble with water.

Due to its ether bonds and ester group, Butylglycol Acetate enters into the typical reactions of this class of substances.

Low-volatility solvent with a mild ester-type odour. Does not contain hydroxyl groups and has good solvent power for numerous resins, dyes, waxes, fats and oils. The main applications are in the coatings and printing inks industries. Can improve the processing characteristics of PVC plastisols. 

Butyldiglycol Acetate is a clear, high-boiling, low-volatility, slightly hygroscopic liquid with a mild ester-type odour. It is freely miscible with most common organic solvents, but miscible with water only between certain limits.

Owing to its ether bonds and ester groups, Butyldiglycol Acetate enters into the reactions that are characteristic of ethers and esters, and it possesses their solvent power. For instance, it dissolves – particularly at elevated temperatures – numerous natural and synthetic resins, plasticizers, waxes, fats and oils.

It may react with atmospheric oxygen to form peroxides.

Butyldiglycol Acetate hydrolyzes slowly in the presence of water but more rapidly in alkaline and acid media.

Medium-volatility solvent with a mild odour. Does not contain any hydroxyl groups and has good solvent power for numerous resins and dyes. Its main applications are in the coatings and printing inks, where it can replace ethoxyethyl acetate in many cases.

Methoxypropyl Acetate is a clear, slightly hygroscopic liquid with a mild odour. It is freely miscible with most common organic solvents, but has only limited miscibility with water. 

By virtue of its ether and ester groups, Methoxypropyl Acetate enters into reactions that are characteristic of ethers and esters and display their solvent power. For instance, it dissolves numerous natural and synthetic resins, waxes, fats and oils.

Since Methoxypropyl Acetate may react with the oxygen in the air to form peroxides, BASF supplies it inhibited with 2.6-di-tert-butyl-para-cresol (butylated hydroxytoluene – BHT).

Medium-volatility liquid with high solvent power for numerous natural and synthetic resins. The main application is in the coating industry.

Pentyl Acetate is a clear, medium-volatility liquid with a mild odor typical of esters. It is miscible with most common organic solvents, but practically insoluble in water.

Pentyl Acetate is similar to butyl acetate in solvent power and diluent tolerance, but evaporates more slowly
