Sustainable Solutions

Sustainable Solutions from Petrochemicals

The Petrochemicals Division serves as the starting point of our customers’ value chains, providing essential building blocks for a wide range of industries. With a strong global market position and regional production, we are well positioned to meet our customers' demand for sustainable solutions worldwide.

Our pivotal role in BASF's sustainability transformation is reflected in our capabilities for greenhouse gas emission reduction and feed-in points for alternative feedstocks. In addition to our standard portfolio, we offer products with low carbon footprint as well as circular solutions, including biobased, biomass balanced and Ccycled products as well as a product with mechanically recycled content. As of 2025, we have RFNBO-certified hydrogen in our portfolio which we produce in our water electrolyzer using renewable power.

Climate-smart technologies

As markets for sustainable products grow, we want to be in a position in the medium and long term to apply and scale up the new emission-free processes and technologies that we are currently developing and, in some cases, piloting. They will help us to reduce the carbon footprint of customer products.

Important levers for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions are electrification of processes combined with renewable energy sources, low-emission steam generation and continuous operational excellence measures.

Sustainable Solutions from Petrochemicals

Low- and zeroPCF solutions

Low- and zeroPCF products and the portfolio of products made using renewable energy come with a reduced product carbon footprint compared to conventional grades.
Our low- and zeroPCF portfolio includes Acrylic Monomers, Alcohols, Glycol Ethers & Acetates as well as our superabsorbent HySorb.

Biobased solutions

Our bio-based portfolio offers solutions for multiple applications. Bio-based products are partially made of biomass. The biogenic carbon content is measurable via the 14C method and contributes to a smaller product carbon footprint compared to fossil grades.
Our bio-based portfolio includes Alkyl Acrylates and Alkyl Methacrylates with biogenic carbon content ranging from 40% to 88%. The 40% bio-based Ethyl Acrylate is using bioethanol exclusively as alcohol source. The alcohol used for manufacturing our 2-Octyl Acrylate is based on Castor Oil, and as a result, 2-Octyl Acrylate exhibits a bio-based content of 73%.

Biomass balanced solutions

For our biomass balanced portfolio, we source renewable raw materials that are certified according to recognized sustainability certification systems such as ISCC PLUS or REDcert2. The use of renewable feedstock in the BASF value chain reduces fossil raw material consumption and the carbon footprint of biomass balanced products.
The Petrochemicals BMB portfolio includes Styropor®, Neopor®, HySorb® and plasticizers. Ask your customer account manager for BMB grades of your product!

ChemCycling® solutions

In ChemCycling®, we use recycled feedstock derived from plastic waste for our broad Ccycled® product portfolio. The recycled feedstock is attributed to the certified Ccycled products through a mass balance approach.
The Petrochemicals portfolio of Ccycled solutions includes Styropor, Neopor, Hexamoll DINCH, Alcohols, Glycol Ethers and Acetates as well as the whole Acrylic Monomers portfolio. Our customers have successfully introduced Ccycled products in industries such as (food) packaging, insulation material, sports and leisure, and safety equipment.

Neopor® McycledTM

An expandable polystyrene granulate with graphite content for the production of insulation boards with significantly reduced thermal conductivity. Neopor® F 5 McycledTM is made with 10% recycled content from mechanically recycled EPS.

RFNBO-certified hydrogen

BASF produces RFNBO-certified hydrogen
For BASF as one of the largest hydrogen producers in Europe, the use of low-emission hydrogen is a key element in reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The gas is a key and irreplaceable raw material for important products such as ammonia, methanol, and vitamins.
The production of hydrogen in our water electrolyzer – using electricity from renewable sources – is fundamental to the market ramp-up of chemical products with a reduced carbon footprint. With the new water electrolyzer which was commissioned in 2025, BASF is taking an important step in the transformation of hydrogen production technology.
The produced hydrogen is fed into the site’s hydrogen Verbund network and distributed to the production facilities as a raw material to manufacture products with a low carbon footprint. Hydrogen can also be used as an energy carrier (mobility, building heating) in other areas of application. BASF supplies RFNBO-certified (renewable fuels of non biological origin) hydrogen for mobility in the Metropolitan Region Rhine-Neckar, supporting the development of a hydrogen economy in the area.
